What is Parts-Work?
There are many different types of parts-work that can be used in therapy. The one I am inspired most by is Internal Family Systems (IFS).*
IFS explores the multiplicities of our personality, or parts, such as emotions, memories, and beliefs to create trust in ourselves and heal old wounds.
By practicing non-judgmental curiosity for all aspects of our personality, especially the areas that we dislike, we can create more internal cohesion, self-compassion, and intentional action.
Holding a systems lens of our inner parts, like we do in IFS, we take into account how shifting one element has ripple effects on all the others. This means that changing one aspect of our lives, will likely affect many others.
Within this framework is the belief that we already hold all the wisdom and ability needed to heal ourselves, the work becomes connecting with and learning to trust this wisdom.
*I am not formally trained in Internal Family Systems (yet), however I have seen beautiful transformations take place using this modality so I integrate it often.
